Both sets are designed as starting points for students who are new to Logic of English and starting at Essentials, and both of them contain all the books and core materials needed to teach the first seven lessons of Essentials.
The Essentials 1-7 Spelling Set contains only the books and core materials needed to begin Essentials. If your student is already reading fluently, and you will be using Essentials primarily to focus on spelling mastery while building grammar, vocabulary, and basic composition skills, we recommend the Spelling Set.
The Essentials 1-7 Struggling Reader Set adds two additional components designed for use alongside Essentials if you are teaching a struggling reader.
- The Essentials Reader Set
- Either the Rhythm of Handwriting Cursive Set or the Rhythm of Handwriting Manuscript Set.
Together, these three programs create a complete and effective reading intervention.

What's next after 1-7?
Whether you choose the Essentials 1-7 Spelling Set or Struggling Reader Set as your starting point, once you complete Unit 7 you can move on to the Essentials 8-15 Set. The materials in the Essentials Reader and Rhythm of Handwriting programs can be used alongside all 30 Units of Essentials, so there are no additional items you will need to purchase for these programs as you continue through Essentials.
If you used Foundations
There is also an Essentials 1-7 set designed for those continuing to Essentials from Foundations, called the Essentials 1-7 After Foundations Set. This set is identical to the 1-7 Spelling Set except that it does not include the core materials, such as Basic Phonogram Flash Cards, that are also used in Foundations.
