Use the Placement Test in the Essentials 1-7 Teacher's Guide to help identify which level spelling list will provide the most effective level of challenge for your student(s).
You don't need to give the Placement Test or choose a level until you are ready to begin instruction, but if you would like to look at it beforehand you can view it on our website: Essentials Placement Test. If you would rather, you can use the online version of the Placement Test which has videos and a google form to help guide your decision.
Once you have completed the Placement Test, you will do any Pre-Lessons as needed and then proceed with Unit 1 with whichever level was indicated by the placement test.
About the Levels
Essentials provides three levels of application for the concepts taught in the lessons - A, B, and C - in order to enable you to provide the right level of challenge for each student or class.
Within each unit in the curriculum, you will find concepts taught to "All." You will also find three different spelling lists - beginner (A), intermediate (B), and advanced (C) - so that you can teach spelling words at the right level of difficulty for the student(s) you have.
Then, as you progress through each lesson, you will also find separate A, B, and C grammar practice activities, spelling dictation sentences, and vocabulary instruction. These activities are divided by level in order to provide an appropriate level of difficulty and to match and reinforce the spelling words students are learning.
