There are only a few changes, since we are still teaching the same basic phonograms we have taught since the beginning of Logic of English. Any edition of the Basic Phonogram Flash Cards may be used with any edition of any Logic of English curriculum as long as you don't mind making an occasional adjustment with a sharpie or index card.
However, here are the details on what we have updated over the years, for those who would like them.
Edition History: Basic Phonogram Flash Cards
Edition 1: Published in 2011. 74 cards.
There were a few minor updates in subsequent printings of this edition:
- 2012 (2nd printing):
- Added two optional sounds, to be taught at the teacher's discretion:
- Phonogram x: We added the second sound, /z/ as in xylophone. We teach this sound as an advanced phonogram, since it is rare, but some teachers like to introduce it earlier because of the prevalence of the word xylophone in children's alphabet books.
- Phonogram qu: We added /k/ as an optional second sound for the benefit of Canadian and British students who use this spelling in common words like cheque. For American students, this sound is taught as an advanced phonogram.
- In pronunciation symbols, the vowel sound in do, soon, and flute is now written /ö/, rather than /oo/.
- Added two optional sounds, to be taught at the teacher's discretion:
- 2016 (5th printing): Added a fifth sound of the phonogram ou: /ü/ as in could.
Edition 2: Published in 2018. 75 cards. Now includes a new card for the phonogram es, as well as all content from Edition 1.
